This Historic $29.5 Million Woodside Estate Was Once Owned by the CEO of Intel

Tucked behind a mile-long drive in the foothills of Woodside lies one of California’s most storied estates—a 25-acre retreat once owned by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife Betty. Offered to the public for the first time in over three decades, the property—known as Mountain Meadow—is listed for $29.5 million with Hugh Cornish of Coldwell Banker Realty and Erika Demma of Compass. It is also featured through the Coldwell Banker Global Luxury program and on Private Exclusive with Compass, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Commissioned in 1927, Mountain Meadow was the debut residential project of renowned architect Gardner Dailey. The Tudor Revival-style main house spans 8,900 square feet and includes five bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and three half-baths. Inside, classic detailing blends seamlessly with modern comforts—from a family/media room with a drop-down cinema screen to a temperature-controlled wine cellar, an elevator, and five fireplaces. A detached three-car garage with a studio and half-bath complements the main residence.
"Properties like Mountain Meadow rarely come to market," said Cornish. "Its layered history and enduring conservation protections make it truly unique."

Between 1992 and 1994, the Moores oversaw a comprehensive renovation of the estate, including the addition of a 2,495-square-foot guest house with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a full kitchen with dual ovens, a wood-burning fireplace, and a covered deck. Additional enhancements to the exterior were made between 2007 and 2011.

The grounds are a masterclass in landscape architecture. Originally envisioned by Bruce Porter—whose work includes the nearby Filoli estate—the century-old gardens feature redwood groves, heritage roses, a one-acre apple orchard, and a year-round creek. Outdoor amenities abound: a tennis court, greenhouse, and pool with changing rooms designed by Thomas Church, along with a 16-car garage and workshop. Sixteen wells provide water for both domestic use and irrigation.

“There’s a timelessness here,” said Erika Demma. “Every inch of this property feels intentional.”
Ensuring ultimate seclusion, the estate is accessed via main and secondary electronic gates and surrounded by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Yet it remains remarkably accessible—just 20 minutes from San Francisco International Airport and within easy reach of Silicon Valley.

Currently stewarded by the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), Mountain Meadow is permanently protected, preserving its natural beauty and legacy for future generations.
"Mountain Meadow was a refuge for the Moore family, a place of peace and reflection," said Eric Normington of POST. "It is ready for a new steward who shares the Moores’ love of the natural world and who embraces this rare opportunity to become a part of the property’s unique legacy."
